EPL Goals Record Under Threat

English Premier League goals record very much in sight despite moderate GW12 forecast

After 11 rounds of the 2016/17 English Premier League season, a total of 306 goals have been scored, at an average of 2.78 per game. This suggests that the previous record of 2.81 per match, set in the 2011/12 season,  is very much under threat.

Manchester City were the highest scorers with 93 league goals in that season but they are only the third highest scorers this time around, with three 1-1 home draws against Everton, Southampton and Middlesbrough respectively somewhat curtailing their performance.

Having said that, Pep Guardiola’s side still have the highest expectancy in Gameweek 12, despite facing a tricky away test at Crystal Palace.

Jürgen Klopp’s free-scoring Liverpool side are leading the way with 30 goals, justifying their WhoScored reputation for creating and finishing scoring opportunities but keeping clean sheets still remains their Achilles’ heel.

Of the big 5 European Leagues, Spain’s La Liga boasts most goals scored per game, averaging a shade over 2.91 per match, so that makes the Reds figure’s impressive. Klopp’s men have conceded 14 themselves, for an average of 4 goals per game.

The overall projection for GW12 is for 26.91 goals to be scored, so this might not be the best week to play any of those FPL Bonus Chips.

Manchester United get the action under way, when they take on Arsenal at Old Trafford and there doesn’t appear to be too much to choose between the sides, judging by the latest Premier League betting odds.

Elsewhere, high-flying Chelsea will be looking to secure another 3 points, as they attempt to close the gap on EPL leaders Liverpool on Sunday, while West Bromwich Albion entertain Burnley at the Hawthorns in the Monday Night Football.

Will we see a new English Premier League goals record set this season?
