Records Are There To Be Broken

Could any of Pep Guardiola’s Man City players set a new FPL standard?

We’ve seen some really positive signs this week which suggest that English clubs are more than capable of dominating in Europe again after a number of years in the wilderness. Tottenham Hotspur were mightily impressive, dismantling holders’ Real Madrid with ease, while Manchester City showcased their attacking talent with an awesome display in Naples.

Pep Guardiola has assembled an impressive cast and this rampant City squad will take some stopping. All the early signs are suggesting that they could easily develop into one of the finest sides to grace the Premier League era. The Citizens might not be a shoe-in to register a new record for the most goals scored by a team in a Premier League season but they look certain to go very close, with Chelsea’s target of 103, set in 2009/10, well within their sights.

If this were to happen, it would almost certainly mean that a number of their star players will have amassed a bucket-load of fantasy points, so are any of them capable of surpassing the mark set by an individual player in a single Fantasy Premier League campaign?

Which player holds the record for most FPL points in a season?

It was a season Liverpool supporters will never forget. A costly Steven Gerrard slip would gift Manchester City the title in a dramatic conclusion to an unforgettable campaign.

Spearheaded by a strike-force that was dubbed the SAS, the Reds smashed through the 100 goal barrier but it still wasn’t enough to enable them to get their hands on that elusive Premier League crown.

While Daniel Sturridge played his part, it was the spectacular form of Luis Suárez that captured most of the headlines. The Uruguayan striker accumulated 295 points on the Official Fantasy Premier League game, an all-time high and this feat was made even more remarkable by the fact that he was suspended for the first 5 matches, as a result of one of the many on-field controversies that have plagued his career.

Suárez’s accomplishments are summarised perfectly in a tweet by @fplru which was accompanied by the following infographic.

Suárez was simply unplayable and his WhoScored average rating of 8.43 is yet to be bettered in a Premier League season.

Can any player set a new record for the most FPL points accumulated during the 2017/18 season?

With a quarter of the 2017/18 Premier League season now completed, we have a good idea of how many points each player can potentially end up with.

Goalkeepers and defenders can easily be discounted since neither of these player groups are explosive enough to accumulate the number of points needed to displace Suárez.

Last season’s top scorer was Alexis Sánchez who amassed an impressive 264 points. However, he’s not expected to get anywhere near that mark this time around. The Chilean international had a disrupted start to the campaign and ongoing transfer speculation seems to surround him.

In contrast, Golden Boot holder Harry Kane has carried on from where he left off, racking up 63 points already. He could easily surpass the 224 points he recorded last time around but eclipsing the mark Suárez set in 2013/14 might be asking too much.

So, if anybody is likely to get close, it will surely be a City player. Sergio Agüero is sure to give a good account of himself but a lack of game minutes is likely to be his undoing, so 200 rather 300 points seems a much more realistic target.

Kevin De Bruyne has started the season in tremendous fashion, putting himself bang in contention for the PFA Player of the Year crown and he could easily set a new record for the number off assists in a single season. However, a lack of goals will almost certainly prevent him from troubling Suárez.

Therefore, if anyone is to get close, it is likely to be the surprise early pace-setter Leroy Sané. The German has 71 FPL points to his name already, which is quite remarkable when you consider that he is averaging less than 60 minutes per appearance.

However, his game minutes have flourished since Fabian Delph was introduced as a make-shift left-back, with 53 points in the last 5 game rounds propelling him to the top of the table.

Guardiola suddenly seems to like what he is seeing down City’s left flank and if Sané could maintain that sort of momentum, he would actually eclipse the record set by Suárez.

It’s unlikely to happen of course but don’t bet against City setting a few other records this season!
