Time running out for ‘Elbows’

Marouane Fellaini was booed off by the Manchester United faithful at the weekend and would appear to be on borrowed time at Old Trafford. The giant Belgian, who signed a last-second,  5 year, deadline day deal, back in September 2013 when David Moyes forked out £27.5m for him, has failed to justify his massive price tag in spectacular fashion.

Fellaini, who failed to open his account in his first season with the Red Devils, did manage to score in 6 league games last season, but so far in this current campaign he has only found the net in one league match and is yet to register an assist.

So what exactly does Fellaini bring to the table?

Well, one would expect him to be capable of using his imposing physique to dominate opponents both aerially and in the tackle but this does not seem to be the case. The statistics shown above in the www.oulala.com infographic make for depressing reading for any fan of the former Goodison Park favourite. Failing to win even 50% of his aerial duels in league matches is quite alarming and he’s not faring any better in the tackling department either.

His lack of pace and mobility are major concerns and it is hard to see him establishing himself at United now, especially with many supporters seeing him as a scapegoat for Louis van Gaal’s woes.

Will Fellaini get another chance, as Manchester United look to turn around a 2-goal deficit, when bitter rivals Liverpool visit Old Trafford for the 2nd leg of their Europa League tie? It’s unlikely and the stats suggest that he shouldn’t but van Gaal has shown remarkable faith in his abilities so it wouldn’t be the biggest shock in the world to see him starting!
