Title Credentials On The Line

Will Spurs end table-topping Liverpool’s winning sequence in GW5?

Liverpool face their first big test of the season when they take on Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley in the lunchtime kick-off on Saturday.

The Reds, who came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders in August, have only conceded 1 goal in their opening 4 Premier League games but they will surely expect a much tougher test than what they have faced so far against Spurs this weekend.

Anfield may have turned itself into a bit of a fortress but it is away from home where the Reds’ title aspirations will either flourish or founder. Liverpool were beaten 5 times on the road last season and that record will need to be improved upon if they are to have any chance of ending their long title drought.

Spurs’ shock defeat at Watford in GW4 means that they now find themselves outside of the top 4 and Liverpool are slight favourites to prevail at Wembley according to our GW5 Goal Projections.

Spurs thrashed the Reds 4-1 in the corresponding fixture last October, with Harry Kane plundering 2 goals while chipping in with an assist for good measure.

However, Fantasy Premier League managers have every right to be concerned about England’s prized centre-forward.

The World Cup Golden Boot winner’s shot volume remains well down on the levels he was setting for himself prior to his injury towards the end of the 2017/18 campaign and it was enough to prompt the brilliant team at StatsBomb to discuss the situation at length in a recent podcast.

Many will no doubt be happy to stick with the Three Lions’ hotshot but we would strongly advise a watching brief for now and think that there are certainly far better candidates around for the GW5 Armband.

Manchester City and Chelsea have the pick of the fixtures and this is reflected in our latest goal contribution ratings.

GW5 Contribution Expectancy (Goals & Assists)
Player 0 1 2 3+
Sergio Agüero 23.40% 33.99% 24.68% 17.93%
Álvaro Morata 26.96% 35.34% 23.16% 14.54%
Raheem Sterling 29.43% 36.00% 22.02% 12.56%
Gabriel Jesus 30.19% 36.16% 21.65% 12.00%
Willian 36.77% 36.79% 18.40% 8.04%
Eden Hazard 37.41% 36.78% 18.08% 7.72%

Cardiff City are the visitors to Stamford Bridge where patience is starting to wear thin with the misfiring Álvaro Morata.

The Spanish international will need to deliver sooner rather than later if he is to continue to retain his place but perhaps Eden Hazard is the safest alternative to Sergio Agüero this weekend.

The Citizens take on Fulham at the Etihad on Saturday and normal service is expected to be resumed after the champions were held to a draw at Molineux last time out.
